Naaa na na na na nuh nah nah~ Katamari Damacy~! I'm not sure what that means, but it sure is fun to roll up people and buildings to that theme. Beautiful Katamari is an abstract and very Japanese game that'll have you rolling up everything into a giant ball so that you may thwart a black hole that has spawned after a royal tennis incident. Yes, you read that right.
Story and Setting:
The intro explains it all, but in short, the King of All Cosmos was playing some tennis on an Earth-like planet and accidentally hit the ball too hard. The godly force of his blow caused a black hole that devoured the entire solar system except for the Earth and Sun. The King manages to magically pause the black hole, but it is unknown how long the magic will last. So they send their Prince to Earth to fix the problem by the only means they know-- rolling stuff up.
If you're thinking "That's stupid." then you really shouldn't be taking this sort of storyline seriously. I'm pretty sure the writer(s) knew that it was silly when they were writing the storyline. All fourteen sentences of it.
Gameplay:
Anyone who has seen Katamari gameplay has probably thought, "That's it? You just roll stuff up?" Well, yes, but there's a little bit more to it than that. You start small, rolling up puzzle pieces and playing cards, until eventually you reach planetary proportions and start rolling up planets and stars. So there's a fun "progression" aspect.
There's also a timer in each level. One does not simply roll around until victory is achieved. You race around against the clock to pick up as much stuff as fast as you can. If you want to challenge yourself, you can optionally roll up specific items to raise your score (for example, expensive items or cold items). It's a bit more fun and challenging than you might expect.
Overall:
This game is simple, entertaining and challenging. I've lost count of how many times I've told my friends to "just try it" and three levels later they're still going strong, rolling up innocent children and kittens to the catchy and cheery music.
